Korbel Champagne Cellars
One of the best known and largest U.S. sparkling wine producers,
Korbel Champagne Cellars has deep roots in the history of Sonoma County. The Heck family, now the winery's second owners, draws from more than 2,000 acres of prime Russian River Valley vineyards to produce solid value sparkling wines.
Korbel Champagne Cellars hosts one of the best historic winery tours in Sonoma Wine Country, as well as a garden tour of the
Korbel Antique Rose Garden. Besides sparkling wine, find some still wine here as well as port, sherry and of course, Korbel's signature brandy line.
Notables: Korbel was started in 1882 by the three Korbel brothers at this faciility near Guerneville in west Sonoma County. In the early 1950s Adolf Heck, then winemaker at Korbel, bought the winery and his family continues as owners of it as well as other Sonoma County wineries Valley of the Moon, Kenwood, and Lake Sonoma. The tasting room offers all the sparklings, a few surprise still wines (including an excellent Chardonnay), and very good, value priced port and sherry. There's lots to do at Korbel, so plan accordingly: cellar tour, garden tour, tastings, wineshop, deli and picnic area. The wineshop has a wide selection of souvenirs, books, and knick-knacks; the deli is fully stocked for a picnic or gourmet lunch, and some of Korbel's sparkling wines come in picnic friendly half-bottle size.
